Using SimpleSetter

Okay, I'll keep it simple. Most of the time, pixel fonts are used for interface elements consisting of a few words. As these words are normally arranged and combined with other graphic elements in an image editing programs, there are no facilities in SimpleSetter for elaborate text layouts as you would in a get in a word processor or DTP program.

To do a simple ranged-left setting of a word or phrase, just type the text, select it, apply a font and colour with the font pop-up menu and colour picker. If you want to change the background colour, you can do so with the background colour picker. The background can be kept or deleted as required in your image editing program.

If you want your text to appear on a transparent layer, make sure that the background is plain white and that 'White is Transparent' is checked in the Utilities/Preferences tab (Mac only).

Frame the area containing your setting with the left, right and bottom guides, the top boundary is the top edge of the editing area. Just drag the arrows at the ends of the guides to move them. Choose 'Copy Graphic' in the Edit menu and paste the setting into your image editor. Alternatively, you can save the graphic to a file using the Export item in the File menu in an appropriate format and open that file in your image editor.

Remember, if you have hidden the guides, the whole editing area will be copied or saved.

centring type
Centring type
Most programs have problems when it come to centring pixel fonts. Rounding errors introduced by their calculations can play havoc with the pixel-accurate spacing required. SimpleSetter gets round this problem by always setting ranged left and padding out the left side with an exact number of pixels.

Type your lines of text with hard returns at the end of each line. Drag the left guide to coincide with the left edge of the longest line and the right guide to align with the right side. If you hold down the Alt key and move either of the guides, you will find that they move in 'mirror' fashion allowing you to center the other lines by adding spaces on their left sides.

If you need small spaces to get lines exactly centred, the 'pixel' spaces provided in the PixelSpaces fonts are just what you need. You can enter these automatically using the 'Insert Pixel Spaces' item in the Tools menu. Choose any combination of 1, 2 or 5 pixels to make up the width you need.

Moving the left or right guide with the Shift key held down, moves the two guides in parallel with one another so you can maintain a setting width should you need to move all the type sideways.

Adding line spaces
If you need to put space between your lines of type, add a blank line by pressing Return, select that blank line starting from just after the last character of the line above to just before the first character of the line below and type the amount of space you want into the text size field. To use that same setting for subsequent lines, simply copy and paste the blank line.
